Welcome to Yala National Park, Sri Lanka’s crown jewel of wildlife conservation. Located in the southeastern corner of the island, Yala spans over 978 square kilometers of protected land, offering a rich tapestry of ecosystems—dry monsoon forests, grasslands, lagoons, and coastal wetlands.
Yala is world-renowned for its high density of leopards, making it one of the best places on Earth to spot these elusive big cats in the wild. But that’s just the beginning. The park is also home to:
Wildlife viewing in Yala is done exclusively through 4×4 jeep safaris. These safaris are led by experienced local guides who know the park’s zones, animal behavior, and the best routes to take.
Early Morning Safaris (5:30 AM – 9:00 AM): Animals are most active during the cooler hours, especially predators like leopards.
Afternoon Safaris (2:30 PM – 6:00 PM): Ideal for elephant sightings and birdwatching as they come out to waterholes.
Zone 1: Most popular and has the highest chances of spotting leopards and elephants.
Zone 5: Less crowded, better for birdwatching and peaceful experiences.
Booking in advance is recommended, especially for Zone 1.
